Martin Vose is one of the teachers on the Social Studies Programme (Samhällsvetenskapsprogrammet). You will probably meet him in your English and History courses. If you choose the specialisation History, your History course will be taught by Martin Vose. Therefore, we have chosen to interview Martin to learn more about what the specialisation will entail - and to do the interview in English, as Martin is both an English teacher and a native speaker of English.
What do you like in History?
I like everything and find most things interesting, but mostly the history of ordinary people and their lives. I like to focus on changes which have maybe improved people’s lives, such as the abolition of slavery or the progress towards democracy. The history of the English-speaking world through the ages, such as the industrial revolution, the Roman and Norman conquest and the dramatic events of the 20th century are also close to my heart.
Who is your favourite historical person?
I don’t have a favourite, but I think certain people’s lives are fascinating because they affected many people’s lives and perhaps the course of history. Among others some interesting figures are the Duke of Wellington, he was one who beat Napoleon at Waterloo, Alfred the Great, the one who stopped the Vikings from taking the whole of England, and Queen Boudicca, who unsuccessfully rebelled against the Romans.
What do you focus on during your History lessons?
Learning from authentic sources is an integral part of the subject. This facilitates analysing events from different aspects and perspectives. I also endeavour to make history come alive in the classroom and awake the pupil’s curiosity and a love of history and the past. This could be through telling the story and background behind objects and events, films, role-play and learning from sources.
